My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
As a first-generation college student and having non-English speaking parents I was on my own throughout the entire application and financial aid process.
2.
I enrolled in a university after finishing my pre requisites at a community college and was told by the university I should consider changing my major after one semester.
3.
Enrolled in a second university where I thought was a better fit for me and met many helpful classmates along the way.
4.
After graduating with my bachelor's degree it came time to attempt the CPA exams. I failed my first two attempts and felt like quitting after that.
5.
After passing my first one I felt like they were all possible so I had to change my study methods with tips from friends that were on the same boat as me.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Teachers:
Don't get an accounting degree if you aren't pursuing a CPA, it is like being a bookkeeper.
How I responded:
I always told myself that I would pursue the CPA but the uncertainty of not passing was always there. I would say that it is definitely possible to pass and there a ton of amazing jobs in the accounting field that do not require a CPA. Do what makes you happy!
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
As a first-generation college student I feel a huge responsibility to repay my parents for the sacrifices they have made to give me the opportunities I've had in life. They left their life behind in Mexico to give my sibling and I a better life.
