"In the arts, you have to have that perseverance to put yourself out there and be vulnerable enough to take constructive criticism, but also strong enough to keep on keeping on, even when it’s hard."

My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
I went to college, met my husband, and had a baby at 21, which changed everything. Before that, I thought I might join the coast guard or be a paramedic.
2.
I had another baby and I decided to go back to school to do my premed requirements.
3.
I matriculated into medical school for a year, but at the same time, I had another baby and ended up feeling like I wasn’t giving my attention fully to anything.
4.
I decided to leave medical school and began volunteering at my son's school.
5.
I became the full-time admissions director there and taught Latin in the middle school; spent 15 years working there and had two more children.
6.
For my last project, I took the school through accreditation and helped create that 100 page document.
7.
Because I was writing for work every day, I figured I’d challenge myself to try to write something creative every night.
8.
By the end of the year, I finished the project and had a draft of a novel. I decided that I could put my head down and do this writing thing full-time, so I did.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Myself:
You can't craft an entire novel.
How I responded:
There's always been my own self-doubt. For anyone that works in the arts, you have to balance the vulnerability to put yourself out there, risk rejection, and have enough confidence to put yourself out there in the first place. I’ve gotten rejection letters and I’ve gotten acceptance letters - that’s just the nature of it.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
Sometimes you’re doing something else and you’re writing in your downtime or you’re doing something tangential like teaching and writing your own creative stuff when you can. It's a balancing act that you have to figure out.
It's sometimes hard to make enough money as a writer/editor. You have to have perseverance to get through those tough times.
