My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
Studied pre-med, but realized that the work-family life I wanted was not achievable as a physician.
2.
I volunteered as a young girl, and it strengthened my passion to work in the non-profit sector.
3.
I was offered an opportunity to work for a bank and took it even though it was never a goal.
4.
I LOVE the work that I do at the bank, and I almost passed it up because of my own insecurities.
5.
I still remember my first public speaking engagement and how nervous I was; now it comes so natural.
6.
Don't be afraid to try things that make you nervous or uncomfortable (refer to no. 5).
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
Why don't you apply to a safe school? Be more 'realistic' with your goals. Oh, but you don't go to a real Ivy League.
How I responded:
Sky's the limit. You are more than what the eye can see. Set your goals high and surround yourself with people that will support you and cheer you on. Minimize the noise by seeking the positive affirmations that will carry you on towards your own goals. Oh, and it's okay to change your mind!!! I did that Senior year of college when I decided I did not want to go to medical school.
Experiences and challenges that shaped me
I had to work while I was in college. Stay focused.
Find your peers. There is power in collective movements and shared experiences. Seek out help when you need it.
