Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Society in general:

I've had a lot of good support. But I've definitely felt the societal pressures of settling down, making money, and being responsible. I also heard a few friends tell me I wouldn't make a good Elementary school teacher, but I never was told why. Earlier in my life, I was told to be a teacher immediately. But I wasn't ready, I wanted to explore in my 20s. And I am really glad I did.

  • How I responded:

I wish I could say I overcame the noise. But noise will always be there. People will think they know what's best for you, and you will have to decide if you agree or disagree. And sometimes it's hard to tell. When it comes down to it, you have to listen to your heart. Know what you want, and go after it, with patience. Lots and lots of patience.
