Day In The Life Of An Insurance Underwriter For The Construction Industry

My Day to Day

I am responsible for underwriting, marketing, and managing a book of business to meet strategies and personal performance goals. I collaborate across all lines of the business to provide a total account solution for Travelers' current and future clients. I also perform in-depth competitor analysis through monitoring rate actions, underwriting guidelines, and product design for both current and future products.

Advice for getting started

I've had to overcome this in a variety of ways, but the first time I encountered it in my life was when I thought I was going to become the captain of my volleyball team but didn't get it. I had to realize that just because I wasn't the leader, didn't mean that I couldn't let my voice and influence be heard. Your status or title doesn't necessarily equate to your influence.

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

    Attended Bryant University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in financial services.

  • 2.

    Her parents both work in the insurance industry, which is what steered her toward a career in that field.

  • 3.

    Interned at Travelers Insurance in the claims department for three years throughout college—after graduation, she was offered a full-time position.

  • 4.

    Participated in their Product Pricing Development Program (PPDP), which trained her on the fundamentals of insurance and pricing concepts.

  • 5.

    Her first job at the company focused on personal lines of insurance, including home and auto—even though she loved the numbers side of the job, she missed being able to connect with customers.

  • 6.

    To satisfy both of her interests, she got the opportunity to participate in the Underwriting Professional Development Program (UPDP), which trained her in the fundamentals of underwriting.

  • 7.

    She now works as an account executive for Travelers, underwriting insurance risks for the construction industry—says this job balances her love of crunching numbers and working with people.

    Loves playing sports, including volleyball, softball, and golf—emphasizes finding the right work-life balance that works for you.
